There are a few different products that TJs sells with chia seeds in them, including Overnight Oats, but these 12-ounce bags are the purest form of them. Keep in mind that chia seeds expand when exposed to water, so you generally want to ensure they are pre-soaked before you eat them dry and dry and drink water.

Trader Joe’s Chia Seeds Review

If you’re looking for an excellent plant-based source of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and protein, then Trader Joe’s Chia Seeds may be the perfect option for you. These tiny black seeds are packed with nutrients and have a mild, nutty flavor that is versatile and easy to work with.

Because they quickly swell after absorbing liquid, it is advised to eat chia seeds that have already been soaked in liquid or are served with a portion of moist food, such as oatmeal or yogurt. Do not eat dry chia seeds by themselves.

Does it matter what Trader Joe’s Chia Seeds I buy?

Black chia seeds have slightly more protein content, whereas white chia seeds have slightly more Omega-3s. However, try to avoid brown chia seeds if you happen to find them. True chia seeds are black or white in color, and brown seeds won’t have the same nutritional value.

Is it better to eat whole or milled chia seeds?

Chia seeds don’t need to be ground before eating to get the nutritional benefits—eating them whole will have the same effect, and how you like to eat them is just a matter of personal preference. They’re also naturally gluten-free and vegan.

What happens if you eat chia seeds every day?

Chia seeds have plenty of potential benefits for your body, such as staving off hunger, fighting free radicals, and lowering inflammation.

What time of day should I eat chia seeds?

The morning

Chia seeds are a great source of fiber. Consuming chia seeds with water in the morning helps in giving your digestive system a boost and improves bowel movement. Healthy digestion is a prerequisite to weight loss. The best time to eat chia seeds is when you wake up.

Can chia seeds reduce belly fat?

Studies have shown that chia seeds consumption reduces visceral adipose tissues, also known as belly fat.

Should chia seeds be eaten raw or cooked?

Chia seeds can be eaten raw or added to recipes. Because the coating of chia seeds soaks up water rapidly, soaking chia seeds in milk or water for a few hours (or overnight) can give the seeds a tapioca pudding-like texture and makes them a great binder to hold baked goods together, like these Coconut-Chia Oat Crisps.

Can you eat chia seeds without soaking them first? Yes, as it won’t hurt to eat them straight, but if you soak them, then you “sprout” them, which releases the enzyme inhibitors that are used to protect the seed.

Who should avoid chia seeds?

Allergies. “Chia seeds are in the mint family, so people with known allergies to mint, sesame, or mustard seeds should be cautious about trying chia seeds,” Zellner says. “Food allergy symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea, itching lips or tongue, or anaphylaxis also.”

I’ve added them to smoothies, non-dairy yogurt, oatmeal, and even baked goods with decent results.  They don’t have a strong flavor of their own, so they won’t overpower other ingredients in your recipes.  These chia seeds sold by Trader Joe’s are organic and priced nicely (like most Trader Joe’s items!).
