Instructions | Croutons In Air Fryer
- Olive oil and seasonings of your choosing can be combined in a tiny bowl. Pick one of the five flavor profiles I’ve described. Mix the oil and seasoning together with a spoon
- In a very large bowl, toss the cubed bread. Use a spatula or your hands to mix them gently
- Heat the air fryer to a temperature of 375 degrees F. (177 degrees Celsius). Place the bread cubes into the air fryer basket and heat for a few minutes. If you want the croutons to be evenly distributed, shake the basket
- For more consistent results, cook the batch in several batches if it’s too big for your air fryer
- Toast the croutons in a 350°F oven for 8 to 12 minutes, turning once, until they reach the desired golden brown and crispiness. Your air fryer, loaf size, and crouton thickness will all affect the cooking time
- The oven or stovetop are also viable options for creating croutons. Those choices are detailed in Note D below
- When finished, set them aside to cool for two to three minutes to achieve the desired crunchiness before using them. Please refer to the below Note E for information on how to store this properly
Important Notes | Croutons In Air Fryer
- Bread (Note A) – Almost any kind of bread will do. In the post above, I mentioned a few different kinds of bread you could try. If you want your croutons to have more texture and flavor, leave the crust on; otherwise, remove it
- Any oil with a high smoke point can be used instead of olive oil in cooking (see Note B) (e.g., avocado or safflower oil). Avoid using butter, as its low smoke point means it will melt and burn in the air fryer
- Keep your croutons plain with salt and pepper, or experiment with one of the five seasonings I’ve suggested in Note C. Alternatively, you could use a premade spice mix, such as jerk, chili, and bagel or za’atar
Expand Your Use of Air Fryer Croutons Further Than Salads
Nevertheless, you can enjoy these crispy morsels in more ways than just sprinkling them on your salad. A few suggestions are as follows:
Spicy Addition to Soup
Soups are more interesting and satisfying with croutons. Creamy soups like tomato soup, bisques, and chowders are excellent partners for croutons. They are also great for beefing broth-based soups like minestrone and chicken noodles.
Sauce for Casseroles
Croutons complement the smooth, creamy casseroles with their pleasing crunch and savory flavor. Those baked spaghetti dishes, chicken casseroles, and potato gratins would benefit from a sprinkle of these.
Changing the Bread Crumbs
Breadcrumbs are made by pulsing croutons in a food processor until they are consistent. If you process the crumbs for too long, their oils will begin to escape. Alternatively, you might throw the croutons in a plastic bag and smash them with a rolling pin or kitchen mallet until they are broken down into even sized-crumbs.
Toss into a food processor and pulse until finely ground. Use in place of breadcrumbs in recipes like meatballs, as a stuffing, or as a coating for roasted chicken.
Snack
Avoid eating the entire batch of handmade croutons while preparing the salad! They have a fantastic flavor on their own and with dips or spreads.
Methods of Stuffing or Garnishing
For a twist on stuffing, try using croutons instead of bread. As croutons are often drier than bread, you may need to modify the amount of liquid you use.
FAQ
Croutons aren’t the healthiest food option, but they’re not terrible, either, as long as you don’t eat them all the time. How and what goes into their production determines how healthy they are.
Whole-grain bread and a touch of olive oil go a long way toward making homemade croutons, which can be air-fried or baked and thus add a little bit of fiber and protein to your diet.
When compared to homemade croutons, store-bought varieties may be full of sodium and preservatives that aren’t great for people trying to eat healthily. And if you’re watching your weight because of your fat intake, you should stay away from fried croutons.
You can use any bread (even sweet bread, if that’s your thing) to make croutons. Although, some bread perform better than others.
Crunchy croutons, for instance, are best made from heartier, drier bread like sourdough or baguette.
Ultimately, the choice of bread for croutons comes down to individual taste. Don’t be afraid to try out a few different kinds of bread until you find the one that works best as a crouton base.
Conclusion
In many dishes, such as salads and soups, croutons enhance flavor. The time and money you save by making your own croutons in an air fryer will be well worth it, and I promise you won’t miss the store-bought variety. These varieties of croutons are truly remarkable because they are made with stale bread instead of fresh bread.
